Meet Lucy . . .

Dog…

You are so noble,
Until the bitter end,
Your medicine is the teaching,
Of true and loyal friends.

I love animals, but dogs have always been my favorite. Over the years I’ve been blessed to have wonderful dogs in my life. Whether they were mine, owned by family members, or friends, dogs seem to be a constant in my world.

It can’t be any accident that in the English language DOG spelled backwards is GOD. In my mind, they seem to be the Servants of Humanity. There is a tolerant spirit in their hearts that holds a compassionate understanding of all our ‘human limitations’.

One of my favorite teachers in my life is Lucy, the Australian Shepherd. She is the best living example of the BEING I’d like to become. Here are a few lessons I’ve learned from Lucy:

  1. Be happy and excited every time you walk out of the door into the world. Lucy is thrilled to meet anyone. She doesn’t care who you are, what you do, or where you came from. When we go on walks it is almost like she is LOOKING for people to visit with. She’ll see people a block away and pull on the leash in that direction. This reminds me of the lesson, ‘You can’t give away what you don’t have. You can only give away what you do have.’ Lucy has love. Love is all she has to give.

  2. Take naps, and do it often. Lucy is never stressed. In fact, I can’t think of any other animal on the planet that feels stress to the level humans do. I’ve heard it said that more people die from heart attacks on Monday mornings than any other day of the week. Something is wrong with that. I think we need to slow down, take a nap here and there and enjoy our lives a little more like Lucy does.

  3. Always stretch before you get up to move. Stretching is very important. Even I know the importance of it, but often feel I am ‘too busy’ to stretch. So the lesson would be to not rush and always take time to take care of yourself. Lucy always finds time for this. Take a deep breath and enjoy!

  4. Eat everything like it was your last meal. Lucy loves to eat and will try just about any kind of food, if she can get her little paws on it. This makes me think of the phrase, ‘Don’t die with your music still in you’ and how important it is to do whatever it is you love, with passion, and to do it now. Time waits for no one and there is no better time than the present. The only state Lucy lives in is NOW.

  5. Play hard and have fun with 100% effort. When Lucy plays catch she does so with extreme hyper focus. No other thought could possibly enter her mind. She reminds me to follow my passion and not worry what anyone might think of it. What others think of me is THEIR business. What I think of me is MY business. Besides, if I am always worried about what others think of me then whose left to run my business?

  6. In order to forgive, you must have blamed. Lucy has no need for forgiveness because she has never blamed. I can do no harm in her eyes. She always comes from a place of love. I wish I could say that I’ve acted the same way. This takes me back to the phrase, ‘When you judge another it does not define them. It only defines you as someone who needs to judge’. I shall learn from Lucy and try my best to love all people, even those I’ve been taught to hate.

  7. Live complaint free. Complaining… we’ve all done it. Some much more than others. I’m beginning to think it is a social thing and people don’t even realize how much of their days are spent complaining. Dogs have no EGO (Edging God Out) and never sit around wondering what their purpose in life is. Lucy’s purpose is to BE in service. All she wants in return is love, praise and affection. Can you even imagine if a small percentage of the population lived this way?

  8. Wag your tail and be yourself (even if you don’t have a tail!). Being an Australian Shepherd, Lucy was born with a tiny tail and has what we call a ‘knuckle butt’. Do you think she cares? No way! She shakes that little rear end as if she has the longest tail on the block! How many of us fail to even try things because of the limitations we put on ourselves? I will take this living example from Lucy and live my life as a no-limit person.

  9. Be patient and enjoy the silence. Lucy can sit for hours in silence. Maybe she’s meditating. That must be her secret to happiness. I’m also amazed how patient she is with me. She’s never irritated if I take too long to get to her walk, or if I am in a bad mood. She never takes herself seriously. I bet if she could talk she’d tell me I think too much. I swear she already knows the goal and the journey are the same. That is one lesson I must always remember.

  10. Always smile and always listen to your instincts. I’m not sure if this is intentional or not, but I swear Lucy looks like she always has a smile on her lips! Next time you are angry, try to smile for a while. It is really difficult to stay angry with a smile on your face. Now about the instincts… how many times have you failed to listen to your inner voice? Lucy always listens to her instincts and never questions herself. I need to think of Lucy when I start to doubt my inner voice and tell my EGO to go bury a bone!

I am forever grateful and honored to have a dog like Lucy in my life. My sweet little GOD-DOG has so much to teach me, and I am eager to be her student.

Looking back through all these lessons makes me think dogs must be real living angels. Maybe they’ve already reached Nirvana and decided to come back one last time and ‘pay it forward’ to us humans.

I really hope one day I get to come back as a dog.
